A unique competitive Pokémon experience

Challenge yourself in this unique Pokémon competition!

Everyone will play the same the game, with the same Pokémon and items appearing in the same places - but each player will make different choices about which Pokémon to catch and train!

Key Rules:

  • Play a custom-modded Pokémon FireRed ROM with unique randomization
  • All players must use the same Rival name (this makes sure everyone's game is randomized exactly the same way)
  • Limited to 5 in-game hours of play, spread out over as many real hours as you'd like
  • Build your team within the time limit
  • Compete in the battlethon on Sunday, June 22nd

How to Play

1. Preparation

  • Download a GBA emulator
  • Download the custom ROM
  • Do as many practice runs as you want, using Rival names other than RIBS

2. Playing the ROM

  • Use the Rival name RIBS when starting the game
  • Play for up to 5 in-game hours
  • No restarting your game or using save states - you must commit to your choices!
  • Transfer your team, scaled to level 100, to Pokémon Showdown
  • Submit your team with our validation form

3. Battlethon

  • Join the battlethon on Sunday, June 22nd
  • Battle other players using your built team
  • May the best trainer win!

This mod transforms Pokémon FireRed into an exciting competitive challenge mode. It's designed for multiple players to race through the game simultaneously, with each player's shared experience being uniquely determined by their Rival's name. While direct link battles aren't supported, players can use Pokémon Showdown for competitive battles.

Core Challenge Mechanics

  • A strict 5-hour time limit keeps the pressure on - when time expires, you're locked in the Celadon Department Store
  • Level balancing system prevents power-leveling:
    • Your team must stay within 7 levels of each other
    • The number of Pokémon that need to be within this range increases as you get badges
    • The game warns you when Pokémon are approaching the level cap
  • Wild Pokémon levels approach your team's average level, based on your badge count
  • Trainers have better Pokémon at slightly higher levels, based on your badge count

Randomization & Variety

  • Your Rival's name serves as a seed that determines wild Pokémon, trainer teams, and item locations
  • Each area has a small chance of spawning rare "early boost" Pokémon
  • Gift Pokémon are replaced with Spinda to maintain randomization fairness

Modern Pokémon Features

  • Includes many Gen 4 evolutions like Weavile, Magnezone, Electivire, and Leafeon
  • Physical/Special split from later generations
  • Expanded movesets and TM collection (156 total)
  • Department Store sells modern items like Life Orb and Nature Mint

Quality of Life Improvements

  • Faster gameplay with speedier movement, animations, and text
  • Start with essential items
  • PC accessible from the START menu
  • Flash no longer needed
  • Increased shiny Pokémon odds (10x normal rate)

Competitive Balance

  • Earn experience for catching Pokémon
  • Earn large sums of money for filling your Pokédex
  • Multiple Exp. Shares available for team training
  • Evolution levels capped at 50 to make it easier to get e.g. Dragonite
  • Legendary Pokémon can't be caught (but give rewards when defeated)
